Why do you have a Phobia?

Most of us are frightened of something, but we can generally manage the fear successfully by avoiding the thing that bothers us. You might be aware of how your phobias were created or have no awareness of how or why you first learned to fear an object or situation.

Some phobias begin with a single incident, usually as a child, but sometimes they develop over time as we respond to seeing a close family member with the same fear. The way the brain works gives us clues as to why phobias develop. Experiencing a strong negative emotion, in the presence of some object or creature, leads to an unconscious learning that this is dangerous and to be avoided in the future.

When faced with that object again, or even something that looks remotely like it, your brain will trigger the fear response to motivate you to get away from danger.  In the case of a phobia, your natural reactions are working perfectly normally but in response to the wrong triggers.

You may think your fear or phobia is silly, but don’t worry – fear is not rational. It is important to recognise that phobias may be mild or severe and that no two people suffer phobias in the same way. However, there is no need to let it carry on dictating your life.

Phobias bring people to Hypnotherapy more frequently than any other condition, and there are a wide variety of therapeutic interventions that can be of positive benefit to the sufferer. Your subconscious mind can be ‘reprogrammed’ so that you do not react in the same way.
